Round Church 10K

I went into this race with not a lot of runs under my belt in the last three weeks since we got back from vacation: two to be exact and they weren't good ones, nope not at all. So needless to say I wasn't planning on much other than a dim hope that I could actually run all 6.2 miles.

Kudos to Julie who ran her first race ever, the 5K, pacing herself just awesomely and finishing strong and wanting more. I sat a bit behind her at 10 minute pace through the 5K turn around and then as the field emptied out took a look around and just appreciated the amazing day and place where we live - one of those perfect late summer Vermont days, with fog lifting from the river, and warm sunshine hinting through the cool morning air that it was going to be a warm one again. We hit a straight stretch after mile two and I found myself reeling in the next group ahead of me - bad, Kerry, bad - but all still felt good (other than the blisters breaking on my heels, stuck inside running shoes without the socks that fell out of my bag as I was rushing out the door) - no sore calves, no funky back/nerve issues...not even really breathing hard. Suddenly it was the turnaround and someone mentions - phew, now its down hill on the way back. Nice. With our hill, I hadn't even noticed the gradual incline, until now, cruising along and again, reeling them in.

Tried to keep it in check until 4 miles and then let myself really go - I suddenly had a goal too: Under 60 minutes (thank you Emilie!) Two or three times I felt the ladies I was passing make a move to keep up and I'd whisper " you can do it", but they let me continue pass....it was getting tougher, but still I was still moving faster and suddenly it was 6 miles, and I spied Julie, Riley and Rick all there cheering me on around the corner where I spotted the timer: 58:48....sweet! Official finish: 59:09 The slowest 10K I have ever officially run, but so sweet this time around since I really had had doubts I would be able to run it at all.

Officially re-kickstarted my BAA training. Got an appointment with Ms. Heather at 6 tomorrow am. Time to get this body really moving again.

I la loo

Grif's current good night is "I love you" in his own special Griffin way.
